Projects banner[back to: Returned Peace Corps Voluneers of NY NY home]

We have current and past projects that are consistant with our mission and guidelines.

Our members continue to serve, using their experience and connections to better the lives of people in many parts of the world and bringing their experiences home through presentations at public events, schools and community groups.

Sometimes we are asked, "How can I help?"  We are currently raising funds for several  worthwhile causes including:

Current projects:  We are funding the following projects.

We are not currently funding any projects, as we move forward with our plans for Peace Corps 50th Anniversary celebration

Past projects

-  Friends of Akuffo Tom School Complex
We helping support the work of Harry & Joan Thornhill at Friends of Akuffo Tom School Complex.  Harry & Joan have obtained 501c3 status for the school and taught at the school in three separate years for 3-4 months each visit.  Letters are posted from their two volunteer teaching visits to yeathe school.
We supporteed the schooling of Nantale Christine, an AID's orphan in Uganda, through Action for Empowerment (AOET).  Monthly letters to/from Nantale Christine will be posted.  You can sign up to write a letter or sponsor another child through AOET.

· The Peace Corps Girls Scholarship program

Many girls in developing countries such as Guatemala (Central America), Niger and Benin (West Africa) cannot afford to go to secondary school due to tuition or living costs and far fewer girls than boys can go to school. The Peace Corps Girls Scholarship program through Peace Corps Volunteers in the field identifies and provides small scholarships to individual girls who want very much to go but cannot.

· The Peace Corps Partnership Program

Peace Corps Partnership funds many projects organized by Peace Corps Volunteers including school construction, well building and sanitation projects as well as youth groups and health and education projects. RPCV's of NENY has in the past funded projects including:
Library Construction & Furnishing - Leon, Nicaragua
Sports Equipment for Schools - Sri Lanka (nationwide)
Girls' School Science Lab - Saraswoti School, Nepalganj, Nepal
Sewing Machines for Women's Work Cooperative - Esmeraldas, Ecquador
Primary School Construction - Asaya/Gotche, Niger

· Jua - To provide solar lighting to rural schools in Kenya

The Jua project was started by an RPCV who was in Kenya, now living in the Hudson Valley. The project subsidizes the installation of solar lighting for schools in rural Kenya with no access to electricity.

· RPCV's of NENY member activities

Some other of our members have initiated small projects. Some that RPCV's of NENY have funded include: A project to develop two simple technologies (a small mechanical grain mill and a solar steam pump for pumping water) and school books for Northern Thailand.

Guidlines for projects we fund:  Coming soon!
