Thornhills in Ghana - Letter 2

Hi All,

We are staying at Comfort Nukator's house. Her husband was a former diplomat to other countries years ago. She is very friendly--excellent cook--has shown Joan how to cook a couple of great Ghana dishes. Her daughter has finished school in London and is on her way back to London after visiting her mother. There were some problems with her visa but it is ok now.

We have seen a few sights--government buildings--Kwame Nkrumah's memorial --big place--also a big parade and official gathering area. The big Black Star Independence Memorial Arch is a traffic circle like the Arche de Triumphe in Paris. Some of the buildings go back to the Soviet era. We took a stroll along the beach and went to a fabric market and craft market. Cleanliness is all relative. Comfort loaned us some clothes until our luggage comes--You will laugh at the pictures. We hired a taxi for a couple of hours--we made him go into the memorial because he had not been there--a teachable moment. We paid him $15--which included a huge tip--this was BIG money for him.

We're suposed to go to the airport tomorrow morning to see about our luggage--absolutely no guarantees--we live in hope. We expect to move up country as soon as we get the luggage. Akropong is awaiting our arrival. Some schools have started this session. There is a primary school across from our house. We've taken pictures of the children--they want to come to America. Instead of bells for changing classes, they beat the drums. All school children wear uniforms. Keep us in your prayers as you read in between the lines!

Loove and Prayers--Harry and Joan
