Carrying the spirit of Peace Corps into retirement, Harry & Joan are off to Ghana for their 3rd volunteer term of service as teachers at Akuffo Tom School Complex.  

They established an NGO with
501c3 status called Friends of Akuffo Tom School Complex.  The EIN (Employee Identification Number) for tax exempt charitable donations is:  20-5839604.

Letters continue to chronical their "adventures" with drought, student rituals, football and toilets, linked below.  
  • January 11, 2010:  The Adventure Has Begun - Letter 1 :  Harry & Joan return to find lots of improvements... the school has been painted, there are new students, new teachers, new volunteers and ...well, the running water thing must not have been a priority! 
  • January 16, 2010:  Letter 2v2:  The first full week of teaching... Through torrential rain and 100 degree heat, Joan & Harry walk the narrow eroded footpath up & down the steep slope.  Fortunately, Harry nipped the new tie part of the new dress code in the bud. 
  • January 19, 2010:  Letter 3 heralds a treat that Harry & Joan may not see again...  Electricy and Piped Water at the Same time!!!  
  • January 23, 2010:  A whole week of water and electricity while the Thornhills to meet other foreign volunteers and report strides taken by the local teachers in letter 4.   
  • January 26, 2010:  We knew the running water couldn't last, but conditions seem to have been good enough for one of the chiefs to reach the age of 110.  Read it in letter 5.   
  • January 30, 2010:  New windows, doors & chairs and teacher workshops are part of the plan for Akkufo Tom students to attain their goals of being teachers, doctors and other professionals, but first... get-out-of-school early for the Africa Cup!  letter 6.   
  • February 3, 2010:  Ghana loses to Egypt (in football, that is), but the Thornhills get one day of running water.  Letter7
  • February 7, 2010:  Space Mountain is over rated... try a ride of a Tro-tro in Letter 8.  
  • February 10, 2010:  The windows are finished... Thanks to Friends of Akuffo-Tom !!!  Letter 9.  
  • February 14, 2010:  The march has begun.  Letter 10
  • February 17, 2010:  Are the Thornhills giving up running water for Lent?  Letter 11
  • February 22, 2010:  Harry & Joan try out an Obama Cheeseburger in letter 11(b)... well, somewhere along the line we were bound to loose count.
  • February 28, 2010:  Harry worked out glitches in bank transfers and new chairs from "Friends" are now in the classrooms.  Carpenters attempt major surgery to revive the old ones.  Letter 13
  • March 7, 2010:  Harry & Joan attended a funeral of a cousin if the proprietor of Akuffo Tom School.  Letter 14
  • March 14, 2010:  Weddings and school trips.  Letter 16
  • March 16, 2010:  The Thornhill's time in Ghana is over, but the need continuesLetter 17

Past years' service

Harry & Joan had previously taught at Akuffo Tom School complex in 2004 & 2008.  They documented their "adventures" in letters to their friends back home.
