Peace Corps turns 50
Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Peace Corps


Our local celebration is below...

Some highlights of Peace Corps history...  
  • October 14, 1960 - President John F Kennedy inspired the creation of Peace Corps in a campaign speech at the University of Michigan.
  • March 1, 1961 - President Kennedy signed an executive order establishing the Peace Corps.
  • August 28, 1961 - President Kennedy hosted a Rose Garden send-off ceremony to honor the first volunteers who will serve in Ghana and Tanzania.
  • September 22, 1961 Congress approved legislation formally authorizing Peace Corps.

Possible Birthday Party #3:  After the election, Sue will reach out to Jack McEneny and/or Senator Neil Breslin to secure a space, if any is left, in the Legislative Office Building or the Capitol or the conference room in one of their offices for a birthday reception.  She’ll already be contacting them for the Legislative Resolution anyway.
