Some highlights of Peace Corps history include...
 

  • October 14, 1960 - President John F Kennedy inspired the creation of Peace Corps in a campaign speech at the University of Michigan.
  • March 1, 1961 - President Kennedy signed an executive order establishing the Peace Corps.
  • August 28, 1961 - President Kennedy hosted a Rose Garden send-off ceremony to honor the first volunteers who will serve in Ghana and Tanzania.
  • September 22, 1961 Congress approved legislation formally authorizing Peace Corps.

March 1, 6-9pmPeace Corps 50th Birthday Party (Albany):  
Steve & Jeanette will host a "Global House Party" at their home in Albany.  Birthday cake will be served!  Bring finger food to share (from your country of service would be fun).  Wear cloths from your country of service, bring a story or artifact.  Invite others who are interested in Peace Corps.  If you can't bring any of those things... come anyway.  See Harry & Joan's photos here.  Eliot's photos are on facebook here...

Follow 1970's Peace Corps volunteers as they travel village to village vaccinating Afghan women against small pox.  At the Crandell Theatre in Chatham.  Details, poster, press release.  See photos and read comments from the event.

If anyone can be in the Assembly spectator seats, Jack McEneny will name you and speak to the resolution email Sue or call her (473-3368 days or 392-2693 evening/weekend) to get a pass.  See photo-op shot and watch the video.

Pix of the Shen & Schenectady events are hereThere were almost 70 people at this event!.  Mary Cinadr, Kathy Sanderson, Eliot Cresswell and Harry Thornhill gave a few facts and figures about Peace Corps, showed a 17 minute video, & discussed their individual experience.  Eliot and Mary both had power point pictures.  The reception seemed very positive.  Many people stopped at the display case on the way out.

Performance from a variety of countries and cultures at Shenendehowa High School in Clifton Park.

Featuring Susan Retnik, the the cousin of one of our members.   Susan lost her husband on Sept 11, founded "Beyond the 11th" and recieved the "Citizens Medal" from President Obama.  NYT Article here. Film screening details here.
